Dairy Farmer Blog: Meet Shayna Stevens

Carter and Stevens Farm is where we call home. We are a 4th generation pasture based dairy farm in central Massachusetts. The 5th generation is coming right along with seven growing children amongst the families. With 200 head of cattle, raising our own crops, growing produce for resale, operating a farm store, and opening a brewery, downtime is scarce. Each family member has their own part of the farm that they are responsible for, but when it comes to things needing to get done, everyone helps out in one way or another.

We are currently milking 80 head of Holstein cows. The barn the cows are housed and milked in was finished in 2013. On our windy back hill pasture we have a 15kw Proven wind turbine and on our new milking barn we have solar panels. Cow comfort is our number one priority. Most of our animals are on pasture when they can be and in the winter, they’re comfortable in the barn.

We grow and harvest our own corn and hay for feed. If we have surplus hay and corn, we sell it to other farms. With over 1,000 acres of land, we make sure it is used to its full potential. In addition to growing food, we also host obstacle course races on the land, which brings a lot of people from cities to the farm and shows them what a real working farm is like.

Our seasonal farm store is a great place for families to relax and have fun. Our motto is “make our family farm your family farm.” We sell ice cream made from our milk, our own produce grown on the farm and local foods and goods. Our deli has a great selection for hot and cold sandwiches. The main attraction in the months of July and August is our “Field to Flame Barbecue,” which features our own grass fed beef burgers and hot dogs, slow smoked ribs and chicken, hand cut French fries, and more. With live music, it is a summer staple.

The latest development on the farm is the Stone Cow Brewery. We opened in July and are going strong. As of right now we have 10 beers on tap including a pale ale, IPA, double IPA, stout, sour, and a few more! On top of all of the beer, there is an attached event barn where we host semi-private and private events, like meetings, showers, birthdays, and weddings!

I graduated from SUNY Cobleskill with a degree in animal science with a concentration in dairy science. When I came home, I started to work on my boyfriends dairy farm, Carter and Stevens Farm in Barre, and have since married into it. We have two beautiful farm children, Daisy and Delmar, with one on the way. We are passionate for dairy and for being stewards of the land. In what little of our spare time we have, I love to make clothing and be with my family.
