It has been about a week since the Blizzard of 2015 hit New England and I am sure you are wondering – what are we going to do with all this snow?
Well we have a nifty answer for you so get ready!
Make some snow ice cream. That’s right, make some ice cream with all the snow in your yard.
So how do you make snow ice cream you ask? It is an easy and tasty treat to make but one thing is for sure – make sure you only grab the clean (and possibly fresh) snow!
What you will need:
- Two large bowls
- A large spoon and/or whisk
- Snow – 5-6 cups
- Sugar – 2 tbsp.
- Heavy cream and/or half & half and/or milk – 2/3cup
- Vanilla extract – a cap full
- Cocoa powder or chocolate shavings are optional – 1 tbsp. or a handful of shavings
Amounts are based on taste preference and amount of snow you are using – making this is all about trial and error, which is great because we have over 3 feet of snow and more coming – but we’ve included some guidelines next to each ingredient.
Directions:
Scoop up clean, fresh snow in one of the two bowls you took out to make your snow ice cream.
Once you have gathered your snow, set it aside and grab the other bowl.
Mix the heavy cream/half & half/milk (whichever one you selected or use a combination of them) with the sugar and the vanilla. It doesn’t matter too much if you use heavy cream or milk or a combination of all of the above – the heavy cream and half & half create a creamier snow ice cream but again, it is personal preference.
If you are going for it, like I did, add your chocolate shavings or cocoa powder and continue to mix until well blended.
Once it is nicely blended together, slowly pour it over the snow in your other bowl. Mix the snow and the cream mix together until it develops an ice cream texture.
The most important thing to remember when making snow ice cream is to pour the liquid ingredients over the snow and not the other way around – it is easier to mix this way because the liquid is able to cover all the snow and isn’t just sitting at the bottom of the bowl.
Scoop into a mug or ice cream bowl and enjoy!
